I could be wrong but I believe the trend of cake smash photo shoots with a professional photographer originated in America and are becoming more and more popular over here in the UK. Not only are they great fun, they’re also a fantastic way to celebrate the milestone of your child’s first birthday.
As previously mentioned I’ve noticed an increase in enquiries regarding cake smash shoots, I must admit I do enjoy shooting them, they’re something different to your standard studio portrait session and watching the child’s face light up as they get to demolish a big birthday cake is priceless!
Layla Jean was no exception, she came in on her actual 1st birthday and was in a great mood, I don’t think she quite knew what was coming though. It’s a strange one really as you spend the majority of their first year telling them not to eat with their hands and definitely don’t face plant a large cake yet here you are sitting them in front of possibly the biggest, brightest, tastiest cake they’ve seen in there life and you’re telling them to go for it! I’ve had a few shoots where the child doesn’t know what to do, they just freeze and look at mam and dad as if to say “Is this a trick?”
Layla Jean took a while to get into her stride, we started off taking a few photos of her in her new birthday clothes before we sat her down in a little tutu and let the fun begin. Slowly but surely she plucked up the courage to take a little bit of cake, with each bite she grew in confidence and before we knew it she had pink icing all over her face, chest and even her feet! It was safe to say not only did Layla love her first birthday cake smash shoot but her mam loved it just as much if not more!
